Yuhang Huang Makes History as First Chinese Singer to Portray JFK in Contemporary Opera

Co-Founder of D Festival Young Pianist Program, US-based tenor Yuhang Huang has broken new ground in the world of contemporary opera, starring as former U.S. President John F. Kennedy in a recent production of Jackie O. This performance marks the first time a Chinese tenor has portrayed the iconic American figure in this celebrated work.

The production was presented at the Nicholas Music Center on November 21 and November 23. Critics lauded Huang's vocal performance and character interpretation, with Fantasia Music writing: “Bright, penetrating tenor carried clearly through the ensemble, giving Kennedy a distinct presence and a more human warmth.”

By taking on the role of Kennedy, Huang has achieved a significant milestone, becoming the first Chinese singer to interpret this character in the opera's history. His performance is seen as a breakthrough for Chinese vocalists in the field of modern opera.

Composed by Michael Daugherty, Jackie O is considered one of the most compelling contemporary operas of recent decades. Inspired by the public image of former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and the cultural backdrop of the 20th century, the work is renowned for its distinct stylistic fusion, blending classical operatic traditions with jazz, rock, and pop culture elements.
